Our mailboxes require little routine maintenance. The main issues are:

  1. The effects on the paint and numbers of exposure to ultraviolet sunlight and acid rain will cause fading. There is not much you can do to prevent fading as a result of exposure to sunlight. It will, however, take years before you will notice the paint has begun to dull and turn grayish. You can prevent the dulling effects caused by acid rain by washing the mailbox annually with a mild detergent such as Dawn dishwashing soap.

  2. Paint is often damaged at the base of the post on mailboxes installed in sod as opposed to those installed in a flower bed. This is caused by string trimmers. The paint finish is applied in the same manner as on an automobile. You wouldn't use a string trimmer on your car so it is good advice to keep it away from the mailbox as well.

  3. Dog urine is corrosive and will eat the paint away. The annual washing will help as will spraying the base of the post with Critter Off or Deer Off. Dogs don't like the smell.

  4. Birds tend to want to perch on the number plate. Bird excrement will cause the same issues as dog urine. Washing it off and spraying again with Deer or Critter Off will deter birds from perching.

  5. Tighten the bolts if the post starts to get wobbly. A metric allen wrench or standard hand tools should do the job.
